Analysis of Language and Content In a Digital Environment
ALCIDE (Analysis of Language and Content In a Digital Environment)
The project is a collaboration between two centres of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (the Digital Humanities group of the Center for Information and Communication Technology and the Istituto Storico Italo-Germanico). Its purpose is to develop a web-based technology for the analysis of political discourse.
The corpus of documents around which the research has developed consists of the writings and political speeches of Alcide De Gasperi, which are now available in electronic format reprising the contents of A. De Gasperi, Scritti e discorsi politici, 4 volumes in 10 tomes, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2006 to 2009, promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento in collaboration with the Fondazione Bruno Kessler.
Through examination of textual occurrences, semantic structures, and temporal patterns in the use of terms and concepts, the software will analyze the formation and evolution of De Gasperi’s political action and the rhetorical discourse that accompanied its developments.
Research of this kind on the one hand furnishes better understanding of De Gasperi’s thought, the links between his language and his political views and culture, and the instruments of its communication. On the other hand, it allows the use, improvement and development of digital and automated research tools in the field of political rhetoric.
This is a distinctly interdisciplinary research project in which historical inquiry dialogues with methods of linguistic and literary analysis and with information and communication technologies.
