«Voices from the piazzas». The piazza as Political Public Space during the Italian Wars

This exceptional political moment determined the extraordinary vitality of public spaces. The piazza was the urban space for political discussions in which a heterogeneous public participated a debate expressed through orality and print.
The concept of transition is an antidote against any teleology. From a theoretical point of view, this project engages critically with the grand narrative of the emergence of public opinion and the analysis of the piazza as political space has the final goal of arriving at a new definition of public sphere that comprehends both the spatial and discursive dimensions.
The research project aims to analyse the nature of the public spaces in which political communication occurred in the transitional period of the Italian wars: an epoch of political, economic and religious transitions occurring alongside – and interwoven with – changes in communication, to which the wars contributed decisively.
