It is obvious that not everything is as it should be in our relationship with food. Suffice it to consider the chasm that separates those who eat too much and are obsessed with their physical appearance, and those who do not know when they will have their next meal and are haunted by the spectre of hunger. Waste and shortage are more the rule than the exception in human dietary history. This book explores various aspects – historical, sociological, ethical, technical, religious – of food. It does so using non-traditional forms of scientific communication which also include two devices generally considered more ‘humble’ than abstract reasoning: images and recipes. In this sense, the book could be called ‘convivial’: a table around which circulate dishes to be selected, chewed, swallowed and digested while recounting, reasoning, smiling, and arguing.

The second post-war period saw profound reordering of the European political space. However, definition of new forms of organization of power and the political institutions did not take place on a tabula rasa. A ‘new beginning’ required coming to terms with the shadows cast by the past, and with the political and intellectual experiences that had preceded the catastrophe. The book investigates the influence exerted by history on management of the political transitions of the post-war period, with particular regard to certain thematic and geographical issues: the formation of new constitutional cultures in Italy and Germany; management of the political turn that came about between the mid-1940s and the late 1950s in Italy and France; the rebuilding of national identity in Austria. Although these were heterogeneous historical-political contexts, examination of the specificities of the various cases highlights the ‘regularity’ of the conditionings that history exerted on the political cultures of the second half of the 1900s.

Leading North American and European scholars turn here their attention on discourses and narratives without neglecting the reality of war and its dramatic effects on civilian population in order to understand when and in what form the Western narrative of war as generative of individual and collective valour declined.

The result of ongoing research at the Italian-German Historical Institute of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler, the volume contains contributions that address the problem of identifying what a ‘historical transition’ is, both as a general problem in itself and as a sequence of significant ‘moments of transition’ over an era. The period of history considered is ‘modernity’, the long time-period extending from the full emergence of humanism and its cultural revolution until the crisis of its underlying principles, so that one may speak, more or less appropriately, of a ‘post-modern age’. Analysed as a consequence are certain major factors that underpinned responses to challenges against historical development in the institutions, economy, culture, religion, and the characteristics of the three transitional stages that characterized modernity: the age of the Protestant and Catholic Reformation, the transition between the eighteenth and nineteenth century, and the dissolutive stabilization phase following the end of the Second World War.

The “Annals of the Italian-German Historical Institute in Trento” (“Annali dell’Istituto storico italo germanico in Trento / Jahrbuch des italienisch-deutschen historischen Instituts in Trient”) were launched in 1975 as a journal in various languages. This publishes the results of scientific work by researchers at the Italian-German Historical Institute, along with papers by outside scholars of particular relevance to Italian and German history from the Late Middle Ages to the more recent European past, with a focus on relations between Italy, Austria and Germany.

For the second consecutive year, workshops conducted by Isig-Fbk researchers will be open to students attending the inter-university master course in "Historical Sciences" administered jointly by the Universities of Trento and Verona. From the month of March onwards, our research personnel – already in possession of doctorates and with suitable training in post-doctorate research – will hold a series of specialized "Historical Research Workshops" of 30 hours duration and with no more than five students each. The workshops will deal with the history of international relations and European integration, European economic history in the modern age, new perspectives in religious history, and reconstruction of the political space after the Second World War.

The course will deal with the historiographical production of the american historian Natalie Zemon Davis.

The birth of public opinion is a key aspect of the development of Western modernity. Decisive for the focus on this theme has been Jürgen Habermas’s work on the 'public sphere' published fifty years ago. With a series of original historical contributions, this book reappraises Habermas’s theory in the belief that, although it is considered outdated, it still raises fundamental questions: how does public discussion come about and what is its power? What is the relation between political discourse and the public authorities? How are the public and public spaces defined? What, ultimately, is the force of communication?
