PhD scholarship at Roma Tre University, in collaboration with the Italian-German Historical Institute in Trento

05 October 2026

As part of the project Travellers’ interactions in early modern Italy (TRAVEL),

funded by the Fondo Italiano per la Scienza (PI: Sandra Toffolo), a PhD scholarship is available at Roma Tre University, in collaboration with the Italian-German Historical Institute in Trento.

This project focuses on interpersonal encounters involving travellers in the Italian peninsula (1400-1600). It aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the practical aspects of interactions involving a wide range of people on the move. In this way, it seeks to address more general issues concerning early modern mobility. Each member of the research team will focus on a specific geographical area, examining different aspects of encounters involving travellers: legislation, the use of urban space, communication, and material culture. Sources produced both by the travellers and by the individuals and authorities they interacted with will be used. Preference will be given to applicants whose projects address this theme in the context of the city of Rome.

Applications may be submitted in either English or Italian. Good knowledge of both languages is required.
