Virtual Interiors: Archival sources and 3D modelling to explore the house of Pieter de Graeff
Pieter de Graeff (1638-1707) was one of the directors of the East India Company (VOC) in the Amsterdam chamber. A keen note keeper, his almanacs contain thus far uncharted information about the construction works in his house along the Herengracht, and about his books and paintings. His almanac entries, combined with other archival records (most notably the probate inventory drawn up upon his death) and building-historical research on his house, allow us to explore his home, library, and painting collection. The interpretation process is supported and enhanced by 3D modelling. This paper argues that by “materializing” and spatially mapping the inventoried objects in a 3D model we can investigate agency and self-representation in the domestic sphere and uncover aspects that were not detectable from the sources alone. The extensive evidence available on De Graeff’s books, furthermore, enables us to outline a profile of him as a book buyer, collector and reader, and to propose a 3D reconstruction of his home library. Finally, this paper examines the interplay between domestic space and the paintings on display by proposing a spatial reading of De Graeff’s probate inventory enhanced by 3D visualization techniques.

Chiara Piccoli - SpeakerUniversity of Amsterdam / ArcholChiara Piccoli is a postdoctoral researcher in the Virtual Interiors project and a Research Fellow at the 4D Research Lab at the University of Amsterdam. In addition, she works as a GIS specialist at the archaeological company Archol. Her research interests focus on urban and domestic contexts and the use of digital mapping and visualization techniques for the integration, analysis and interpretation of historical data.
